Cookie policy – leaguebetsnz

Writing about rugby league and betting needs only a handful of technical tools, and this policy lists them: what they are, what they do and how they can be switched off. Cookies are small text files kept by the browser, and local or session storage and counting pixels work much the same way.

Cookies that need no choice

A few files are required for the site to run at all. They keep a session going, share load across servers, protect forms from misuse and remember the cookie choice. No separate choice is given for them. A session file ends with the browser, and a stored choice is kept for twelve months at most.

Cookies that depend on consent

Functional files keep preferences, such as the comparison table last opened. Analytics files count views and show which pages get read, so content can be improved. Neither group is set until the banner choice has been made. IP addresses are shortened for analysis, and no cross-site behaviour profiles are made.

External services

An outside video or map may place its own files, and then that provider’s privacy rules apply and objections go to it. leaguebetsnz sets no advertising cookies that build profiles for personalised ads unless the banner choice is clear.

Legal footing

The Privacy Act 2020 applies where cookies and similar tools collect personal information, through the information privacy principles in section 22. Collection has a lawful purpose connected to running the site (IPP 1), and people are told what is collected and why (IPP 3). Reasonable safeguards secure the information (IPP 5), it is not kept longer than needed (IPP 9), and disclosure outside New Zealand is subject to IPP 12.

Changing or withdrawing a choice

The “Cookie settings” link in the footer allows a change or withdrawal whenever wanted, and withdrawal takes effect for the future. Browser privacy settings can also block and delete cookies. Once necessary files are deleted, the banner comes back, and some features may briefly stop.
